    Electronical animal identification

    Current EU regulations
A lot of progress has been made over the last years, starting with the introduction of the electronic tagging of farm animals.
The EU requires, that sheep and goats have to be electronically tagged. Electronic identification with boli or electronic eartag is mandatory for all ewes and rams that will live longer than one year and born after 1st of January 2010. Some nations, like Spain have started official tagging earlier.
In Spain all breeding animals born are marked with boluses starting in 2006. Roughly 7 million animals carry a bolus, mostly from RUMITAG/Datamars livestock division. It has been proven already that the electronic marking is a great success in Spain, based on our robust and proven technoloy. The countries of South America and Canada have started to build traceability for all cattle movements on the same basis. Australia is even more advanced with the electronic identification regulation. The cattle carry just one electronic ear tag for their identification!
The EU has published regulations, that the electronic marking serves optionally as the second official tag for cattle. The time of fully decorated ears will have come to an end.
Electronic Injectables are official identification of horses, starting e.g. in Germany for all newborn foals born after 1th of July 2009.
All of these identifications rely on the world-wide ISO standard 11 784 unique animal number. The radio-frequency and data transmission is specified by ISO 11 785 and robust hand-held and stationary readers are available from us and elsewhere to read the electronic identification fast, reliable and correct. Much faster and error-save than any visual number can be read! Together with farm management software and links to the official national databases, the farmer has a better view on movement and performance of the individual animal or groups.

Possibilities for electronic marking of tThe animal
    Injectable microchip
These microchip are popular where the marking should not be visible, like for pets, horses and zoo animals.
The electronic microchip is capsulated in a glass cover. They are available in a sharp and sterile one way use syringe and are injected subcutaneously or intramuscularly. The 12 mm injectable microchip is very popular in dogs, cats and horses with passports, because they are hardly bigger than a rice corn. Should the horse be recognised as well on an electronic feeding station, the 23 mm and 32 mm long ones are better, because of their wider identification reach.

    Bolus tranponder
The RUMITAG-Bolus consists of a ceramic cylinder with integrated electronic tag. The bolus is swallowed by ruminants and stays in the rumen due to its weight. The bolus is first the choice for sheep and goats. Also large ruminants like cattle and water buffalo are marked with boluses already. An advantage for this system is the simple design and the trouble-free take out in the slaughter house with the possibility of reuse. Because of this, the bolus is suitable for quality meat programs from the farm to slaughterhouse. Boluses for the official animal identification are removed after slaughtering. The mini bolus is particularly popular, with just 20 gramm weight for marking sheep and goats from 10 to 12 kg live weight. The application for lambs is possible by hand and the losses are very low. This mini bolus is used in a big way in Great Britain with roughly 3,5 million pieces at NSP to breed scrapie resistant sheep. The Bolus ensures the fast identification and supplements perfectly with the genetic ear tag samples for the alel identification of the animals.

    Electronic ear tags
The electronic ALLFLEX ear tag is applied into the ear with a tagger and is a lot better protected than visual tags due to its light weight. The smaller EETS ear tag is available for sheep, goats and pigs. Tags for the farm use have an open pin hole, while the ones for the official tagging have the front covered. Manipulations are immediately visible through the broken seal.
